Humorous "real-life My Big Fat Greek Wedding" takes documentary box office crown again; Malala second
Meet the Patels, the comedic documentary from sister-brother directors Geeta and Ravi Patel, is the number one documentary at the box office for the third week running. The film about Ravi's adventures in love and arranged marriage earned another $174,445, pushing its total to $729,804, according to audience measurement firm Rentrak.
Meet the Patels, which director Michael Moore hailed as the "funniest doc I've seen in years," played on 72 screens for a per-screen total of $2,423.
He Named Me Malala, the new film from Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim, debuted in second place among documentaries, earning $60,884. However, it only played on four screens, giving it a per-screen average of $15,221, according to Rentrak.
He Named Me Malala, the story of human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, appears set to take the box office crown this coming weekend when it expands nationwide to more than 200 locations.
Meru, from directors Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhelyi, and Amy, from director Asif Kapadia, continued their lucrative turns at the box office. Meru came in third over the weekend, pushing its grand total to $2,200,091.
Amy, now in its 14th week of release, came in fourth upping its impressive total to $8,312,696. Alex Gibney's Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine took the fifth spot.
