Doc box office: 'The Eagle Huntress' skies over competition

The Eagle Huntress is beginning 2017 the same way it ended 2016: on top of the documentary box office.

The film by Otto Bell continues to charm audiences, collecting another $114,718 over the weekend to easily nest atop the charts. According to audience measurement firm comScore, the documentary's total box office take now stands at $2,460,976.

The visually stunning film, photographed in the Altai Mountains at the intersection of China, Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan, focuses on the exploits of 13-year-old Aisholpan who aims to became her country's first female eagle hunter -- a task that involves training an eaglet to hunt (the birds are released back to the wild as adults).
