Hit docs RBG, Three Identical Strangers and Won't You Be My Neighbor? also in running for Best Documentary Award Free Solo, the new documentary about climber Alex Honnold's death-defying effort to scale Yosemite's El Capitan rock face without a rope, leads the nominations for the third annual Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. The film directed by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin earned six nominations, including Best Documentary, Best Director and Most Innovative Documentary. Additionally, Honnold was named one of eight nominees in the category of Best Living Subject of a Documentary. Minding the Gap, Bing Liu's documentary that explores emotional traumas he and two skateboarding friends experienced growing up in Rockford, Illinois, earned five nominations, as did Wild Wild Country, the Netflix docu-series by Chapman and Maclain Way that recently won the Emmy Award for documentary series. Wild Wild Country is the only documentary project that is nominated for both Best Documentary and Best Limited Documentary Series. The year 2018 has been called ‘The Year of the Documentary’ and we are so happy to give these films and shows the recognition and high praise that they deserve. The three most successful documentaries of 2018 will all compete for Best Documentary: RBG, the Julie Cohen, Betsy West film about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Three Identical Strangers, Tim Wardle's doc about the strange case of triplets separated at birth, and Won't You Be My Neighbor?, the film about children's television pioneer Fred Rogers that was directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville. "The Critics’ Choice Awards are determined by qualified members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA)," according to a press release announcing the nominees. The awards will be presented Saturday, November 10 at BRIC in Brooklyn, New York, in a ceremony hosted by "Science Guy" Bill Nye. These are the nominations as announced on Monday:
