One hundred fifty-nine feature documentaries have qualified for Oscar consideration this year, the Motion Picture Academy announced Tuesday.

That number is down slightly from last year, when 166 feature documentaries qualified, and two years ago when a record 170 docs made the qualifying cut. To qualify a documentary must have played in theaters in New York and Los Angeles before premiering on television or streaming platforms.

"Documentary features that have won a qualifying award at a competitive film festival or have been submitted in the International Feature Film category as their country’s official selection are also eligible in the category," the Academy notes.

Two documentaries directed by Alex Gibney -- The Inventor: Out For Blood in Silicon Valley and Citizen K-- made the list of qualifiers. So did two docs directed by Thom Zimny -- The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash and Western Stars (co-directed by Bruce Springsteen).

As expected, some of the most decorated films of the year made the list, including Apollo 11, For Sama, Honeyland, One Child Nation and American Factory.

The list of 159 qualifiers will be trimmed to a shortlist of 15, to be announced on December 16. These are the feature documentaries officially in the running for the 2020 Academy Awards:
