The IDA Documentary Awards nominations were announced today, giving major recognition to women directors in an outstanding year for nonfiction film. [Full nominees list below]

Of the 10 IDA Best Feature nominees, six were directed or co-directed by women, including Advocate (Rachel Leah Jones and Philippe Bellaiche), American Factory (Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert), For Sama (Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts), Honeyland (Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov), One Child Nation (Nanfu Wang and Jialing Zhang), and The Edge of Democracy (Petra Costa).

The filmmakers behind Advocate, American Factory, For Sama, Honeyland and The Edge of Democracy also earned Best Director nominations - a new category this year.

In a further sign of the strong year for women directors, half of the nominees for Documentary Short were made by female filmmakers.

All of this year’s nominees and winners illustrate that documentary storytelling is one of the most vital art forms today.

--IDA Executive Director Simon Kilmurry

Honeyland, the story of the last female wild beekeeper in Europe, led all contenders with three nominations overall and one victory: it was named the winner of the Pare Lorentz Award.

The Edge of Democracy and American Factory also scored three nominations each. For Sama earned two and the film's Syrian-born co-director Waad Al-Kateab also was named the recipient of the Courage Under Fire Award, "presented to documentarians displaying conspicuous bravery in the pursuit of truth." Al-Kateab's life was under constant threat in Aleppo as she documented the personal story of trying to raise her baby daughter Sama in the midst of Syria's devastating civil war.

"Back in Aleppo, I had no option but to fight the fears and horrors of this war through filming my experience both as a mother and as a female filmmaker," Al-Kateab said in a statement. "And now to receive the Courage Under Fire Award, I am moved and honored and even more inspired to continue to tell these important stories. This award means so much."

“The IDA Documentary Awards recognizes excellence in nonfiction storytelling across a range of forms, and all of this year’s nominees and winners illustrate that documentary storytelling is one of the most vital art forms today," Simon Kilmurry, the IDA's executive director, said in a  statement. “These features, shorts, series, and audio documentaries explore all parts of the human experience. They challenge us and entertain us. They speak to the need for a more compassionate world and illustrate the unlimited resilience and potential we have by sharing these stories with each other. They build bridges across continents and cultures.”

The IDA Documentary Awards will be presented December 7 on the Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood. Nominations were determined by committees made up of distinguished filmmakers and other leaders in the doc community. IDA members are eligible to vote online to determine the winners in the Best Feature and Best Short categories (voting window open from November 4 to December 2).
